Katie McCabe is among the nominees for the 2023 Ballon d'Or award.
The 27-year-old Arsenal player joins the likes of World Cup winners Aitana Bonmati and Lionel Messi in the pool of candidates. It's the first time since 2000 when Roy Keane was a candidate that an Irish player has been nominated.
Katie, who hails from Kilnamanagh in Tallaght, captained the Republic of Ireland women's team to their first World Cup over the Summer. Despite failing to move past the group stages, McCabe made history when she became the first and only Irish women's player to score at a World Cup.
Other accolades for the footballer include the Goal of the Season award with Arsenal and making it to the semi-finals of the Champions League. McCabe is the first Irish woman to receive a nomination and joins the short list of Irish players, including George Best, Liam Brady and Paul McGrath, who have been nominated for the coveted award.
