In Photos: The Beatles' only ever Dublin concert 60 years ago

Photos show Dublin's - and Ireland's - only exposure to Beatlemania

For the anniversary of The Beatles' only concert date in Dublin, we decided to share some archive photos that show what it was like being at their gig 60 years ago.

The Beatles had two concerts at the former Adelphi Cinema, which used to reside on Abbey Street, on November 7 in 1963 at the height of their popularity. Beatlemania hit the capital and over 200 gardai were reportedly on duty that night to control the crowds.

Inside the auditorium, a reviewer from The Irish Times despaired that they could not hear the performance over the sound of "ecstatic, joyful, hysteric, demented" screams from Dublin teenagers.

The Irish Times also reported that more than a dozen men had been arrested when fights erupted after the first of the evening’s gigs ended and about 3,000 people leaving the theatre mingled with fans waiting to go in for the second concert.

At least 50 people were treated for minor injuries, while three people were taken to hospital with fractured legs and arms. A youth was also hospitalised after being stabbed in the head.

The newspaper recorded that cars were overturned in Abbey Street and O’Connell Street, traffic was brought to a standstill and a bus driver was reportedly dragged from his cab at one point. Three fire engines had to come to assist the police as girls screamed and had to be pulled to safety.

Let's take a look at the selection of photos taken on that November night and try to imagine what it was like being there.
